Free boundary value problems, moving contact lines and fluid-solid interactions
Wettability describes the behavior of a liquid in contact with a solid surface. For example, when a liquid droplet is placed on a solid surface, it will assume a certain shape, dictated by the solid surface, surface tension of the fluid and gravitational forces. Wettability processes play a major role in a wide range of applications like microfluids, spin coating of polymers and inhibition of liquids into porous media.
Mathematically such problems can be formulated as free boundary value problems for the Navier-Stokes equations or for Non-Newtonian fluids with or without boundary contacts.
